They believe it was caused by a neighboring male in what's known as a "long call battle," Laumer told Business Insider. Adult male orangutans like Rakus shout out "long calls" to attract females and let rival males know that this is their territory. Rakus may have unintentionally touched his leaf-mush-covered finger to his face, and instantly felt the pain-relieving properties of the plant, Laumer explained. But, because this is the first time this behavior has ever been observed in orangutans, scientists can't say for sure why or how Rakus did it. More alike than we are differentRakus's behavior reminds us a lot of our own behavior with medicinal plants, which could help us understand where our knack for medicinal treatment first evolved.

"One of the things we know about the brain and memory is that 'use it or lose it' absolutely applies," she tells CNBC Make It. "If you tend to always rely on Google to remember a particular fact, for example, and don't 'use' your brain to remember it, your brain gets very good at not remembering it." If you tend to always rely on Google to remember a particular fact ... your brain gets very good at not remembering it. Here are three simple steps you can take to wean yourself of Google and improve your recall. "Even if this doesn't work at first, and you end up having to Google it anyway, you will slowly strengthen your memory pathways and improve your recall," she says.

Read previewMany of the convenient breakfast foods found in grocery stores are ultra-processed, from cereals to bars. But healthier alternatives that are still easy to pick up and go do exist, a dietitian told Business Insider. At the same time, dietitians have previously told BI that it can be unwise to stop eating all UPFs because some are healthier than others and they can be a cheap and easy way to consume nutrients. When it comes to breakfast, experts agree that the ideal meal includes protein, carbs, and healthy fats. For this recipe, I nestled my beloved greens in their pan with chicken thighs, another weeknight favorite. It makes for a skillet dinner that’s not much harder than cooking the greens by themselves, but a lot more substantial. Chicken breasts — either bone-in or boneless — will also work well. Boneless breasts have a narrow window of being done but not overdone, usually about 5 to 7 minutes less than boneless thighs, so watch them carefully. And if you’re a fan, olives or capers gives this a briny zing that rounds out the earthiness of the greens.

In the midst of that deflating loss to the Raiders, their fifth in eight games, Chiefs coach Andy Reid and his offensive brain trust came to the realization that their famously complex offense had grown — well, too complex. “It's a complex offense. One of the problems the Chiefs had against the Raiders was the time it took to get plays into the game. Reid is usually calling them from the sideline, but it is Nagy whose radio is connected to Mahomes' helmet. And now, we're going to the Super Bowl, and like I've said, we're not done."

As recently as 2019, less than one-third of young men said that they faced discrimination, according to Pew, but today, close to half of young men believe they face at least some discrimination. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women. Most young men are probably not interested in making America great again, but they do feel acutely the need to secure a place for themselves in a culture that readily identifies male advantage but ignores the challenges young men face. Yes, according to a Ugandan company that's buying banana stems in a business that turns fiber into attractive handicrafts. TEXFAD also takes material from a third party, Tupande Holdings Ltd., whose trucks deliver banana stems from farmers in central Uganda. Such items are possible because “banana fiber can be softened to the level of cotton,” Okello said. Working with researchers, TEXFAD is now experimenting with possible fabric from banana fiber. While it is now possible to make paper towels and sanitary pads from banana fiber, the company doesn't yet have the technology to make clothing, he said.

Scientists have long thought Earth's inner core is like a huge solid metal ball. It could help explain why Earth's magnetic field is so weird. Jung-Fu Lin / UT Jackson School of GeosciencesThe Earth's inner mush revealedA 2021 study had already started to question the big-iron-ball assumption. Seismic waves, they found, weren't really going through the Earth in a way consistent with a fully solid core. A scene from ‘Strange Planet’ Photo: AppleTV+To paraphrase another famous comic strip, we have met the strangers of “Strange Planet,” and they are us. That, as becomes abundantly clear, is the Jupiter-size joke in Nathan W. Pyle ’s webcomic-cum-series on Apple TV+. The more immediate, Mars-equivalent gag is the translation of very earthy reality into absurdist techno-speak: Parents are “life-givers”; years are “revolutions”; unwanted cilantro in your “swaddled mush” is “soap leaf.” You may find your mouth stones on edge before episode 3, and it won’t be from too much jitter liquid.

Peaches do very well in the Rating Game, I’ve found, even if your chances of actually eating a perfect peach are low. But cooking a bad peach can make it terrific, which is why I’m so thrilled about Yossy Arefi’s new recipe for a peach crisp (above). Peel them if you like a luscious texture against the buttery crust of oats (I’m a rustic; I don’t peel).

On a Thursday evening in late June, Clarissa Champlain learned that her 15-year-old son Brodee had been in a terrible crash, the latest teen victim of an e-bike accident. The e-bike, a model made by Rad Power, had a top speed of 20 miles per hour, but his route took him on a busy road with a 55-mile-per-hour limit. Ms. Champlain rushed to the hospital and was taken to Brodee’s room. “I went to grab his head and kiss him,” she recalled. In the days following, the town of Encinitas, where both incidents occurred, declared a state of emergency for e-bike safety.

Manchester United stock fell as mush as 13.5% after a report suggested that it's worth billions less than the club's owners are seeking. A Financial Times analysis indicated that United's value is likely to be around $1.6 billion. The club's owners, the Glazer family, reportedly want at least $6 billion, per The Athletic. But an analysis by the Financial Times suggested the team's value is much lower — likely around $1.6 billion. The $1.6 billion valuation may ignore the intrinsic value of owning one of the sport's most notable franchises and brands as well.

Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz are facing off for US Senate in Pennsylvania. Fetterman's health has become a focal point of the race after he suffered a stroke in May. Donald Trump Jr. mocked Fetterman on Sunday, saying he doesn't have "a working brain." Fetterman's health has been a major focal point during the race and many GOP figures, including Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, have mocked him for it. The Oz campaign has also repeatedly questioned Fetterman's ability to serve and insisted he provides a regular update on his health.
"But he needed way more time to be able to process effectively," McFarland, the chair of Lehigh County's Democratic Committee, told Insider on Wednesday. During the one-hour showdown against his Republican rival Mehmet Oz, Fetterman at times struggled to get his message across clearly, speaking haltingly and stumbling on his words. James Carter, a 71-year-old Democratic voter, told Insider that Fetterman is simply not getting enough credit. "I kind of felt bad," Stacy Garrity, Pennsylvania's state treasurer, told Insider. "I don't even think that John Fetterman should be running," Beth Gdowik, a 59-year-old voter from the Lehigh Valley area, told Insider.
Democrats in Pennsylvania have continued to defend John Fetterman after his debate performance. John Fetterman make his case to voters in Pennsylvania's Senate debate on Tuesday evening, one thing became clear to her: time was not on his side. Some Republicans hope Tuesday's debate, the first and only one before Election Day, would push Oz ahead in the polls.
John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz faced off in their first and only debate on Tuesday evening. The Fetterman campaign lauded his performance shortly after the debate ended. "I do support fracking," Fetterman repeatedly said. Oz attacked Fetterman over crime, while Fetterman hit Oz on his wealth. In their final statements, Fetterman said he's fighting for the "forgotten communities" of Pennsylvania, and Oz declared himself a "candidate for change."
During the interview, Fetterman occasionally stuttered and had trouble finding words. Tune in to “Nightly News with Lester Holt” at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT for more of our interview with Fetterman. “It changes everything,” Fetterman said, responding to a question about how his recovery has changed his day-to-day. “If you’re going to be our next senator, you have to give the answer,” said Fetterman, who opposes the Graham legislation. Oz has criticized Fetterman for agreeing to just one debate — and accused his rival of hiding from voters during the stroke recovery.
Tardigrades can survive in extreme environments, but a new study shows they're not indestructible. Scientists found these creatures couldn't survive speeds above 2,000 mph when shot out of a gun. The researchers shot canisters full of tardigrades out of a high-speed gun at various speeds to see whether the creatures could survive the pressure of each resulting impact. After being shot out at speeds under 900 meters per second (about 2,000 mph) — that's faster than your average bullet — the tardigrades could be revived. But if tardigrades can't survive the pressures of a collision with our moon, it's unlikely they could survive a meteorite impact with another planet, the study authors wrote.
